This is one time during the year when I take a few days to do something just for myself. I love meeting new people, hearing their stories, sharing mine. No expectations beyond being in each moment. It is sacred space.
“Soul friends” - probably the best description of those creative and passionate people I have had the opportunity meet and learn from at the Okoboji Writers’ (and Songwriters’) Retreat.
Plus it is fun meeting so many writing icons in person and finding out they are just regular, normal human beings.
One of my favorite sayings is: The expert at anything was once a beginner. You have to start somewhere. Start with this Retreat. Keep an open mind steered towards learning and you will be amazed at what you come away with. This will be my second Retreat and I can't wait to find out what I will learn.
Life has thrown its vicissitudes my way enough times to have learned how to spell the name. Even so, I gathered and lost the confidence to enroll in this adventure many times. The creative excuses for not attending were better than my writing skills. I’m not confident enough to drive alone, it’s too far, where would I stay, don’t really know anyone who’ll be there, so I’d likely just be alone listening, and of course it’s way too expensive on my budget.
My best friend in Minnesota told me without hesitation, “Peter, you can’t afford NOT to go!”
Still sheepish, and more than a little self doubting, I took advantage of the early bird discount. The committee inside my head you alluded to , continues telling me there’s no way I have the time, talent or money to go. They’ve been fired.
Can’t wait to be part of this assemblage of talented people. Thanks for sharing your encouraging words, Julie!
OWR is one of my favorite events for writers of all levels. Such kind souls and brilliant minds gathering at a beautiful lake. What’s not to love? I can’t wait!

I love this! and your words might give comfort to others!
Now, the question is do I need to sign up for volunteer work and select my workshops in advance? Thanks !
